Ezra Petronio: As we are going to press I just wanted to discuss how this issue came about. How did you initially get the idea to shoot at the Regensburg castle?

Juergen Teller: When you asked me to do the whole issue, I was thinking about the collections of several designers, including Marc Jacobs, and lot of it was quite eighties influenced. Marc told me that his collection was partly inspired by Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis. I had been to Gloria’s castle about four years ago, when she was selling some of her art collection. Phillips de Pury, the auction house, invited me to photograph the artwork in the castle. Gloria just handed me over the keys and I could go anywhere and do anything there. Then I met her daughter Elisabeth at a Cindy Sherman opening. And I was talking about her mum, how eccentric, extravagant, and stylish she looked in the eighties. She was exciting, with her punk hairdo, riding a motorcycle through Regensburg. Elisabeth told me that all that clothing from the eighties was still in the archives at the castle. All these extreme pieces of Alaia, Montana, Thierry Mugler, Paco Rabanne. And I really like the way Elisabeth looks, with her combination of aristocratic greatness and youthful beauty. I thought that it would be great to combine archive pieces with modem pieces on her. Gloria was very excited about it and that’s how it developed.
