bauhaus – The Bauhaus Dessau Foundation’s magazine – #3
Text auf Deutsch und Englisch
The third issue of bauhaus is dedicated to things. “A thing is determined by its essence” wrote the Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius in 1925, and this issue has committed itself to investigate the very essence of things. The magazine has sought out everyday objects such as teaspoons, cacti, mirrors and price tags, all that may seem banal at first sight, but permit analysis of utopia and emancipation, fetish and consumer behaviour. Through articles and essays the contributors investigate how the Bauhaus changed the way we deal with things, and what the debate about the object per se has developed into today. With their third issue, bauhaus appears in a new design by the Amsterdam studio Our Polite Society, who also brought in Dutch photographer Paulien Barbas for a special project.
