In Japan 30% of single women and 15% of single men in their twenties have admitted to having fallen in love with a meme or a character in a game. According to Adbusters this is emblematic to humanity’s increased detachment from reality. Or is the virtual, real enough already?! All things considered, Adbusters’ biggest share of criticism on the matter is reserved to Western capitalist ideals and the West’s determination to drag the rest of societies to modes of living strange to their inner selves. From an uncompromising standpoint against banks, politicians and corporations, Adbusters also takes aim at celebrities who have previously shown exceptional goodwill, like Bono of U2, who engaged in efforts to relieve developing countries from debt, or Madonna, who’s enthusiasm for charity work is widely celebrated, but have both evaded millions of tax assets in offshore havens.
